The release of Aung San Suu Kyi received rave reviews from around the world. United States President Barack Obama called Suu Kyi as "a hero of mine."

"Well if Aung San Suu Kyi's house to live in jail or in prison, his country, does not change the fact that he and his political opposition that he represents, have been systematically deprived, alienated and ignored the opportunity to be involved in the political process," Obama said told the The Associated Press.

British Prime Minister David Cameron also welcomed the release. "Aung San Suu Kyi is an inspiration to us all who believe in freedom of speech, democracy and human rights," he said.

"It's crucial for Aung San Suu Kyi has not restricted the freedom of movement and speech and to participate in the political process in his country," said European Commissioner, Jose Manuel Barroso.

Suu Kyi's release is only a week after the elections held on 7 November. International parties criticized election is won by the party who supported the junta.

Last election in 1990 was won entirely by Suu Kyi's party National League for Democracy. But the junta refused to give power and instead arrested Suu Kyi, who later won the Nobel Peace Prize.
